Discovery of Biodynamic Agriculture
Born in 1916 on the family farm in Northeast Pennsylvania, Josephine Porter delivered raw milk for her father’s dairy and later had her own goat dairy.
Influenced by her mother’s physician, Dr. Max Gerson, she intended to study medicine. However, her life path changed when she met Dr Pfeiffer at her first biodynamic conference in 1947. She wrote, “I found it! The biodynamic method of farming and gardening. I have long been interested in health which depends on healthy plants, animals, and soil life.”
Contributions and Legacy
She became the preparation maker and secretary-treasurer for the Biodynamic Association in 1956. Under Dr Pfeiffer’s guidance, she made quality preparations and generously answered thousands of inquiries about the practical applications of biodynamics. In addition to serving on the board for 24 years, she made and distributed preparations nationally, and supplied the Pfeiffer Foundation until her passing in 1984.
Foundation of JPI
Hugh Courtney founded JPI to honour Josephine Porters' 28 years of service making biodynamic preparations. Her work ensured that the biodynamic preparations would continue to be available for the community to use and for education and research purposes so that the earth may be healed.
