What it does:
Supports biodynamic composting as the stinging-nettle member of the BD 502–507 set. In a 2026 laboratory comparison, an Italian BD 504 material stimulated growth of selected compost-associated bacteria.
How to use:
Use the finished preparation as part of a complete BD 502–507 set. Make six holes evenly across the compost pile and place this unit into one of the first five holes, about halfway down the pile. Close the hole with old compost or good soil so no air pocket remains. One complete set treats up to 15 tons of compost; use the full set on smaller piles also.
Ingredients:
Stinging nettle (Urtica dioica).

Research spotlight: In a 2026 in-vitro comparison of individual compost preparations, a BD 504 sample from an Italian producer gave the strongest Ureibacillus terrenus growth response and was the only preparation to significantly stimulate Parapedobacter luteus. Separately, a 27-year field experiment found distinct soil-microbial functional profiles after manure compost was prepared with the full BD 502–507 set; it also compared a yarrow-only treatment. Use JPI’s finished BD 504 with the complete compost set as directed below.
