Description

Agricultural use only: This is a compost preparation for application to compost and crops. Not for human or animal consumption.

One unit is 1 milliliter.

At a Glance:

Biodynamic role:
Used with the complete BD 502–507 compost set; traditionally associated with phosphorus processes and warmth.

How to use:
Use as part of a complete BD 502–507 set. Empty one unit into 1 gallon of lukewarm rainwater or other chemical-free water and stir vigorously for 10 minutes, alternating directions rhythmically. Pour half into the sixth compost-pile hole and spray the other half over the pile in a fine mist. One complete set treats up to 15 tons of compost; use the full set on smaller piles also.

Ingredients:
Valerian blossoms (Valeriana officinalis).

Product Details:

Part of the Biodynamic Compost Set.

BD 507 is the valerian component of the BD 502–507 compost set. An in-vitro study of an Italian BD 507 sample measured Ureibacillus terrenus at 107 CFU/mL and Geobacillus thermodenitrificans at 108 CFU/mL after incubation, compared with a 104-CFU/mL starting inoculum. In a separate Washington State University compost experiment, piles treated with the complete BD 502–507 set showed higher alkaline-phosphatase activity than untreated piles at day 100, a measured phosphorus-related response.

Compost application

Empty one unit into 1 gallon of lukewarm rainwater or other chemical-free water and stir vigorously for 10 minutes. Divide the gallon in half: pour one half into the sixth hole, then spray the other half over the entire compost pile in a fine mist. This is the current handout method for BD 507 as part of the complete compost set.

For frost-season crop spraying, a JPI-reported basil comparison found that BD 507-treated plants had the lowest visible-damage score one week after 18 simulated cold exposures: 1.5/10, versus 3.0 unsprayed and 4.5 water-sprayed. Follow the separate frost-season crop-spray directions; the compost-pile method above uses its own dilution and stirring time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Biodynamic Valerian Preparation used for?

BD 507 is a valerian-flower preparation used with BD 502–506 in a compost pile. Biodynamic growers use it to support warmth and phosphorus processes. In a 2026 in-vitro assay of an Italian BD 507 sample, two selected compost-associated bacteria grew to 10^7 and 10^8 CFU/mL from a 10^4-CFU/mL starting inoculum. In a separate compost-pile experiment, the complete BD 502–507 set showed higher alkaline-phosphatase activity at day 100 than untreated compost.

How do I use the Valerian Preparation for compost?

Empty one unit into 1 gallon of lukewarm rainwater or other chemical-free water and stir vigorously for 10 minutes. Pour half into the sixth compost-pile hole and spray the other half over the pile in a fine mist.

How much compost does one BD 507 unit treat?

Use one unit as part of a complete BD 502–507 set. One complete set treats up to 15 tons of compost; use the full set on smaller piles also.

What does phosphatase research tell us about BD 507?

Phosphatase helps release phosphate from organic matter. In a 2003 Washington State University compost experiment reported by Jennifer R. Reeve, the complete BD 502–507 set showed higher alkaline-phosphatase activity than untreated compost at day 100 (p = 0.0085). At final sampling, untreated compost measured higher activity (p = 0.0171). The experiment documents a time-specific phosphorus-related response for the complete preparation set, which includes BD 507.
